Hello and welcome! I’m Maiko (here’s how to pronounce my name, like “Mike-Oh”), an Early Intervention (EI) & Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Specialist, Autism Consultant, trainer, and doctoral candidate at the University of Oregon.
Over the years, I’ve worked closely with families of young children with disabilities and/or developmental delays, as well as with teachers and fellow providers. In my previous career, I supported international students from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. While these roles might seem quite different, both deepened my understanding of how language, identity, and systemic barriers shape access to support, and how our beliefs and values influence the ways we engage with one another. As an immigrant mother of two, I also know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to navigate an unfamiliar educational system. These personal and professional experiences motivate me to keep learning, so I can better support the children and families I serve.
My dissertation explores access to EI services, focusing on how systemic factors shape who receives support and how services end. I use data tools like R to better understand the patterns behind the numbers and to support more responsive, community-centered systems.
Looking ahead, I hope to work with future educators and researchers as they explore topics like educational access, family-centered practices, and data equity.

療育・自閉症のスペシャリストとして米国オレゴン州で働いている 畑 麻衣子です。オレゴン大学の博士課程では、療育や早期発達支援に関する教育機会の違いや格差をテーマに、R言語でデータの分析と可視化に取り組んでいます。自閉症など発達に特性のある子どもとその保護者への支援（コーチング）、ユニバーサルデザインの視点を取り入れた教育実践、教員養成に関する研究にも取り組んでいます。
以前は日本やアメリカの大学で、教員やアドバイザーとして英語教育に携わっていました。学習障害などにより学びにくさを感じている大学生や留学生と出会う中で、どう支援すればよいのかを模索しましたが、当時は十分な文献や情報が見つかりませんでした。そこで、同じ思いを持つ同僚とともに、世界最大の英語教員学会 TESOL 内に「Supporting Students with Disability Interest Section（障がいのある学生支援部会）」を立ち上げたのが2018年のことです。その初代チェアも務めました。
